Devon Smiley Legacy Scholarship

Devon Smiley Legacy Scholarship

Devon “Devo” William LaMarr Smiley was born July 1, 1998. He was his father’s dream and his mother’s gift. Devon was the youngest of three children, and learned early on to challenge his siblings’ way of thinking as they challenged him daily to leave a legacy. Tragically, at the age of 17, Devon, a senior at South Haven High School, was killed in a car accident on November 1, 2015. Devo will be fondly remembered by friends and family for his shining personality, giving sense of self, belief in the good of others, fun-loving desire to explore the boundaries of living, and most of all his kindness.

Impact

Devo enjoyed sports and as he grew older so did his enjoyment in soccer, track, wrestling, and baseball, but most of all football. He made it a point to hit the weight room several nights and weekends while working part-time. He volunteered as a counselor for children’s football and baseball camps, and through his willingness to play and engage with the kids, often became a favorite counselor. Devon once wrote “Kids always seem to have a fun time around me and I love making them laugh. When kids laugh, it makes me feel like I have impacted their lives in a positive way.” In memory of Devin, his family has establish this scholarship in his name to benefit a student under the age of 25 who has experienced the loss of a sibling or immediate family member.
